With powder-white sand and water in every shade of turquoise, Al Alamein is the jewel of Egypt’s Mediterranean North Coast. It sits about 100 km west of Alexandria. Once known mainly for a decisive battle of the Second World War, the area is now one of Egypt’s favourite summer destinations, with beach resorts, a brand-new city and a lively festival season.
Al Alamein’s Second World War Legacy
In 1942, the battles of El Alamein turned the tide of the North African campaign. Today the El Alamein War Museum displays uniforms, weapons and maps from the conflict. The Commonwealth cemetery, with more than 7,000 graves, is a quiet and moving place to visit. You can read about its history in this overview of the El Alamein War Cemetery. German and Italian memorials stand on the coast road to the west.
Beaches and Water Sports
The beaches around Al Alamein are among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. Calm, clear water makes them ideal for families. Resorts and beach clubs offer kitesurfing, jet skis, paddle boarding and boat trips, while Marassi Marina adds yachts, restaurants and evening promenades.
New Alamein City
New Alamein City is one of Egypt’s flagship new cities, with seafront towers, hotels, a corniche, shopping and a growing choice of restaurants. It has turned the region into a year-round destination rather than a summer-only escape.
Summer Festivals and Events in Al Alamein
Every summer, the Alamein Festival brings concerts by leading Egyptian and Arab artists, along with art and entertainment events, to the coast. Combined with beach clubs and nightlife along the North Coast, July and August are the liveliest months to visit.
Desert Excursions
Inland, the Western Desert begins almost immediately. Safaris and quad-bike trips explore the dunes. Adventurous travellers can continue a long day’s drive south to the Siwa Oasis, with its salt lakes, hot springs and ancient Oracle Temple.
When to Visit Al Alamein
June to September is beach season, with warm sea and busy resorts. Spring and autumn are quieter and pleasant for sightseeing. Combine your stay with the Greco-Roman sights on our Alexandria day tour, or ask us to build a North Coast holiday around your dates.
