The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing. Built for Pharaoh Khufu around 2560 BC, it rose about 146 metres high and was the tallest structure on earth for nearly 4,000 years. Standing at its base, with blocks taller than your waist stretching up into the sky, is a moment few travellers forget. Here is how to plan your visit in Cairo.
A Short History of the Great Pyramid
Around 2.3 million stone blocks were used to build the pyramid, which was originally covered in polished white limestone. Today it is around 138 metres tall after losing its casing and capstone. It stands beside the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure and the Great Sphinx, together forming part of the Memphis necropolis World Heritage Site.
Going Inside the Great Pyramid of Giza
A separate ticket lets you climb through a narrow passage and up the soaring Grand Gallery to the King’s Chamber, where Khufu’s granite sarcophagus still lies. The climb is steep and humid, and not suitable for anyone uncomfortable in tight spaces, but standing inside the heart of the pyramid is unforgettable.
- Tip: tickets for the interior are limited, so arrive early in the morning.
Things to Do on the Giza Plateau
See the Sphinx and the Valley Temple
Walk down to the Great Sphinx and the granite Valley Temple of Khafre, where the pharaoh’s body was prepared for burial.
Ride a camel or horse
A short camel ride to the panoramic viewpoint gives you the classic photo of all the pyramids in a row. Agree the price before you get on, or let your guide arrange it.
Watch the Sound and Light show
In the evening, the monuments are lit up while a narrated show tells the story of ancient Egypt. Book it as our Pyramids Sound and Light show with hotel transfers.
Visit the Grand Egyptian Museum
Khufu’s 4,500-year-old solar boat, once displayed beside the pyramid, is now in the nearby Grand Egyptian Museum, together with the treasures of Tutankhamun.
Best Time to Visit
October to April brings the most comfortable weather. Arrive when the site opens to enjoy cooler air, softer light and fewer crowds. Bring water, sunscreen and comfortable shoes, because the plateau is large and sandy.
