Watching the sun rise over a sea of granite peaks is the reason most travellers go climbing Mount Sinai, also called Jebel Musa or Moses Mountain. Revered in Judaism, Christianity and Islam as the place where Moses received the Ten Commandments, the mountain rises 2,285 metres above the southern Sinai desert near St. Catherine. This guide covers the routes, timing and practical tips for the climb.

Two Routes to the Summit

The Camel Path

The longer, gentler trail zigzags up the mountain and suits most walkers. Camels can carry you part of the way. The final section, about 750 steps, must be done on foot.

The Steps of Repentance

Around 3,750 rough stone steps climb steeply from behind the monastery. It is a shorter but much harder route, and many hikers prefer it for the descent in daylight.

Climbing Mount Sinai for Sunrise

Most groups start walking at about 2 am so they reach the summit before dawn, a climb of roughly two to three hours. At the top, Bedouin huts sell tea and rent blankets, and a small chapel and mosque stand side by side. As the sky lightens, the surrounding mountains turn from grey to pink and gold.

  • Dress in layers: even in summer the summit is cold before sunrise, and in winter temperatures can drop below freezing.
  • Bring a torch: the path is unlit at night.
  • Wear proper shoes: the trail is rocky and uneven.
  • Climb with a Bedouin guide: local guides lead groups up the mountain.

St. Catherine’s Monastery

At the foot of the mountain stands St. Catherine’s Monastery, one of the oldest working Christian monasteries in the world, built in the 6th century. Its library of ancient manuscripts and icons is world famous, and the area is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Opening hours are limited and change on religious holidays, so check before you plan your morning.

Bedouin Culture and the Wider Sinai

The local Jebeleya Bedouin have guided pilgrims here for centuries. Sharing sweet tea or a simple meal with them is part of the experience. Beyond the mountain, the Sinai coast offers easy add-ons: the Coloured Canyon and the beaches of Nuweiba, or the laid-back reefs of Dahab.
